New Payment Solution Launched for Russian Travelers Visiting Indonesia

Indonesia has introduced a specialized financial solution designed to simplify transactions for international visitors, specifically addressing the needs of travelers from the Russian Federation. Developed by PT Manna Indonesia Group, the new system leverages local infrastructure to facilitate payments across the archipelago. This development aims to provide a more stable alternative to unregulated methods, allowing tourists to navigate the local economy using integrated digital tools provided by major Indonesian telecommunications and financial service providers.

Mechanism of the Digital Payment System

The payment process requires tourists to acquire a local SIM card from the national operator Telkomsel upon arrival. Once the mobile connection is active, users must install the LinkAja application, a prominent digital wallet platform in Indonesia. This setup enables travelers to make purchases at various merchants across popular destinations such as Bali, Jakarta, and Lombok.

Technical specifications and financial constraints of the system include:

  • The maximum transaction limit is set at 20 million Indonesian rupiahs (IDR) per single operation.
  • The cumulative monthly spending cap is restricted to 40 million IDR.
  • Direct top-ups from Russian banking institutions are currently not supported due to existing international financial restrictions.
  • Initial account funding still necessitates the use of cryptocurrency to bridge the gap between foreign funds and the local digital wallet.

Shift from Informal Transaction Methods

According to Hansela Kalista, the founder of the project, the initiative was born out of a need to formalize how visitors manage their expenses. Previously, many tourists relied heavily on peer-to-peer cryptocurrency exchanges or informal cash markets to obtain local currency.

"Previously, Russian tourists used cryptocurrency for transactions in Indonesia. The new system allows for direct transactions without prior purchase or exchange of cryptocurrency [[at the point of sale]]", stated Kalista.

This transition toward using LinkAja provides a more structured environment for tourism-related commerce, benefiting both the local hospitality sector and the visitors who require reliable payment methods for accommodation, dining, and transportation.

The implementation of this system marks a significant step in Indonesia's efforts to maintain its status as a leading destination for Eastern European travelers. By integrating local fintech solutions with telecommunications infrastructure, the authorities are providing a functional workaround for the financial hurdles currently faced by international tourists. As of July 2026, this system remains one of the primary legal avenues for seamless digital payments for this specific demographic in the Indonesian market.
