New Horizons: Direct Baku to Shanghai Flights Set for May 2027

Azerbaijan’s national carrier, Azal (Azerbaijan Airlines), has announced plans to establish a direct air bridge between Baku and Shanghai. According to official reports, the commencement of scheduled services on this route is anticipated for May 2027. This move signals a strategic expansion of Azerbaijan’s aviation footprint in East Asia, aiming to strengthen transport links between the Caucasus region and one of China's most significant economic and financial hubs.

Expanding Air Connectivity with China

The development follows ongoing negotiations between Azerbaijani authorities and Chinese carriers to further diversify the regional route network. Florian Zengstschmid, a representative of the Azerbaijan Tourism Bureau, confirmed that the dialogue focuses on increasing the frequency and variety of flight options. Currently, the aerial connection between the two nations is maintained through several key channels:

  • Direct flights operated by Azal from Baku to Beijing.
  • China Southern Airlines services connecting Baku to Beijing and Guangzhou, which currently include technical stops in Urumqi.
  • Future long-haul expansions intended to link the Heydar Aliyev International Airport with major Chinese metropolitan areas.

Strategic Tourism and Branding Initiatives

To facilitate the expected influx of travelers, a dedicated Azerbaijan tourism representative office has already been inaugurated in Beijing. This office serves as a primary point of contact for travel agencies and individual tourists, providing information on the historical and cultural landmarks of the region. The initiative is part of a broader state strategy to position Azerbaijan as a premier destination for high-spending travelers from the Asia-Pacific region.

Furthermore, the bureau has scheduled a presentation of Azerbaijan’s updated tourism brand for August, which will showcase modern hospitality infrastructure and heritage sites. These promotional efforts are designed to complement the new flight paths, ensuring that the increase in seat capacity is met with high demand.

The introduction of the Baku—Shanghai route represents a significant step in the bilateral cooperation between the two states. By May 2027, the reduction in travel time and the convenience of direct transit are expected to facilitate not only leisure tourism but also business exchanges. Industry experts suggest that these new flight corridors will play a pivotal role in the long-term growth of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.
