Nepal Launches Electronic Visa System Starting August 17, 2026

Starting August 17, 2026, Nepal is officially transitioning toward a more digitized entry process with the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new system aims to streamline the arrival process for international tourists, allowing travelers to manage their documentation and fees prior to landing at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or other border points. While the traditional visa-on-arrival remains available, the electronic option provides a more efficient alternative for global visitors.

Application Process and Requirements

Travelers can access the official portal at nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np to submit their applications. The procedure requires applicants to provide comprehensive details, including passport information, intended travel dates, and a local address in Nepal, such as a hotel or guesthouse. Additionally, a digital photograph must be uploaded as part of the online form. One significant change for many travelers, including citizens of the Russian Federation, is the requirement for advance payment using a foreign bank card, moving away from the previous reliance on cash transactions at the border.

  • The electronic visa will be processed and sent to the applicant within 24 hours.
  • The document remains valid for entry for six months from the date of issuance.
  • Travelers must print the ETA to present it during airline check-in and at immigration desks.

Visa Fees and Stay Durations

The Department of Immigration has confirmed that despite the shift to a digital platform, the fee structure for tourist visas remains unchanged. These costs are categorized based on the length of stay permitted within the country:

  • 15-day visa: $30 USD
  • 30-day visa: $50 USD
  • 90-day visa: $125 USD

Note: These figures represent the standard government fees, though additional processing charges may apply depending on the payment method used.

The implementation of the electronic visa system marks a significant step in Nepal's efforts to modernize its tourism infrastructure. By allowing visitors to settle fees and provide documentation in advance, the government expects to significantly reduce wait times at passport control. For those who prefer the established method, the option to obtain a paper visa upon arrival will continue to be supported, ensuring flexibility for all categories of international travelers.
