The Indonesian government is considering a significant revision of its immigration fee structure, aiming to increase the cost of visas on arrival (VoA). Hendarsham Marantoko, the Head of the Immigration Office, has indicated that the current fee of 500,000 Indonesian rupiah (approximately $32) is no longer sufficient given recent fluctuations in global currency exchange rates. The proposed adjustments are designed to modernize the entry process for international travelers while ensuring the administrative costs of border management are adequately covered.
New Pricing Tiers for Electronic and Physical Visas
Under the new proposal, the authorities plan to introduce a tiered pricing system that incentivizes digital applications over manual processing at the border. The proposed fee structure includes:
- The electronic visa (e-VoA), obtained online prior to departure, would cost 750,000 rupiah.
- The standard visa on arrival, issued physically at airport counters, would increase to 1 million rupiah.
According to immigration officials, doubling the cost for on-site processing is a strategic move to reduce queues at major gateways, such as I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. By encouraging tourists to secure their documents in advance via the official online portal, the government hopes to enhance the overall efficiency of terminal operations.
Evolving Immigration Policies for Foreign Visitors
This proposal follows a series of regulatory updates aimed at refining the stay of foreign nationals. In May 2025, Indonesia updated the protocols regarding tourist visa extensions. While travelers were previously able to extend their 30-day stay online, current regulations now require a physical visit to a local immigration office for extensions beyond the initial month. However, the initial 30-day electronic visa remains available for convenient online application for eligible nationalities.
The proposed increase is intended to encourage tourists to obtain documents in advance and reduce queues at airports
stated Hendarsham Marantoko during the briefing on the fiscal changes.
While the specific implementation date for the new price hike remains unconfirmed, the proposal is currently awaiting final government approval. Travelers planning trips to Indonesia in the coming months are advised to monitor official announcements from the Directorate General of Immigration to ensure compliance with the latest entry requirements and to avoid unexpected costs upon arrival.
