The Indian government has officially implemented significant updates to its entry requirements for international visitors, aimed at streamlining border control and digitizing the immigration process. Effective April 1, 2026, all travelers arriving in the country are required to complete a new e-Arrival Card, which replaces the traditional paper-based forms previously distributed on flights. Alongside this digital transition, the Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified the current regulatory framework for electronic visas, ensuring a more structured approach for tourists entering the country.
Transition to the Digital e-Arrival Card
The introduction of the e-Arrival Card represents a shift toward a fully paperless entry system at major international gateways, such as Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. This electronic document must be submitted by all foreign nationals prior to their arrival, facilitating faster processing at immigration counters. The measure is part of a broader "Digital India" initiative to reduce physical contact and administrative delays at the border.
Electronic Visa Regulations and Validity
Under the revised guidelines, the electronic visa system continues to offer an accessible route for short-term visitors. The current policy emphasizes the following parameters for the e-Tourist Visa:
- The visa remains free of charge for eligible categories, processed entirely through the official government portal.
- The standard electronic visa is typically issued as a double-entry permit.
- The total validity period of the visa is 120 days from the date of issuance.
- Holders are permitted a maximum stay of up to 30 days within the country during the validity window.
"The integration of the e-Arrival Card with existing electronic visa protocols is designed to enhance the security architecture while providing a more seamless experience for the global traveler", noted a representative from the immigration department.
These administrative changes reflect India's commitment to modernizing its tourism infrastructure to accommodate the increasing volume of international arrivals. By consolidating visa processing and arrival documentation into digital formats, authorities aim to provide a more predictable and efficient entry environment. Travelers are advised to verify all documentation on the official Indian visa website at least several days before their scheduled departure to ensure compliance with the latest entry protocols.
