Grozny Airport to Expand International Flights to Egypt, China, and Jordan

The administration of the Grozny International Airport (Severny) has announced a significant expansion of its flight geography, targeting new destinations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. According to Alvi Shakhgireyev, the Director of the airport, the facility is preparing to launch regular services to Egypt, China, and Georgia, as well as establishing a connection with Jordan via Royal Jordanian airlines. This strategic move aims to transform the Chechen Republic's capital into a more prominent regional aviation hub.

Modernization of Aviation Infrastructure

The planned expansion of the route network follows the successful completion of major technical upgrades at the airfield. A key milestone was the inauguration of a new 3,200-meter runway, which provides the technical capability to receive wide-body aircraft of any type. These improvements ensure operational safety even in challenging meteorological conditions, reducing the likelihood of flight delays due to visibility issues.

  • Increased number of aircraft parking stands to accommodate a higher volume of simultaneous arrivals.
  • Certification for heavy aircraft, enabling long-haul flights to East Asia and North Africa.
  • Enhanced navigation systems to support international civil aviation standards.

Strategic International Partnerships

The inclusion of Tbilisi and Amman in the upcoming schedule represents a shift toward deeper integration with Middle Eastern and Transcaucasian transport corridors. The involvement of Royal Jordanian is particularly noteworthy as it marks the entry of a major international carrier into the local market. Shakhgireyev emphasized the importance of these developments for both tourism and business logistics.

"Among the planned routes are Egypt, China, Tbilisi, and Jordan. For the latter, we are looking at flights operated by Royal Jordanian", stated Alvi Shakhgireyev.

The modernization and the subsequent route expansion are expected to significantly increase the annual passenger traffic at Grozny Airport. By offering direct connections to major global markets like China and popular leisure destinations in Egypt, the airport is positioning itself as a competitive alternative for travelers in the North Caucasus region. These infrastructural developments align with broader efforts to enhance the transport accessibility of the Russian Federation's southern territories.
