Ankara Esenboğa International Airport (ESB) has announced a temporary suspension of commercial flight operations on July 7 and 8, 2026. This measure is being implemented to accommodate the high-level logistics and security protocols required for the NATO Summit currently taking place in the Turkish capital. Travelers planning to visit or transit through the central Anatolia region during this period should prepare for significant schedule adjustments.
Specific Restriction Schedules and Impact
The restrictions do not cover the full 48-hour period but are concentrated during peak arrival and departure windows for diplomatic delegations. According to official notices, the flight bans at the airport will follow this timeline:
- On July 7, commercial traffic is restricted from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- On July 8, commercial traffic is restricted from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
These windows are designed to prioritize the safety and movement of international heads of state and official representatives attending the summit meetings in Ankara's government district. Consequently, dozens of domestic and international departures and arrivals have been cancelled or rescheduled to late-night or early-morning slots.
Airline Policies and Passenger Alternatives
Major carriers serving the region have responded to the disruption by offering flexible rebooking options. Ajet airline, a prominent operator at Esenboğa, has proactively updated its policy for passengers holding tickets between July 6 and July 9.
Ajet airline offers the option to change bookings free of charge or receive a refund for unused segments for flights to/from Ankara, including connecting flights.
This policy ensures that travelers impacted by the summit-related closures can manage their itineraries without financial penalty. Travelers are advised to check the status of their flights via official mobile applications or carrier websites before heading to the terminal, as security perimeters around the airport may also cause ground transportation delays.
The temporary closure of Ankara's primary aviation hub highlights the logistical complexity of hosting major international summits. While these measures ensure the security of the diplomatic proceedings, passengers are encouraged to utilize the provided refund and rebooking windows to avoid being stranded at the airport. Commercial operations are expected to return to a standard schedule by July 10, 2026.
