Air Tanzania has announced plans to integrate Russian payment systems to facilitate ticket purchases in Russian rubles. This strategic move coincides with the upcoming launch of direct flight operations between Moscow and Tanzania, aimed at streamlining the booking process for international travelers. Currently, the airline’s official booking platforms only support transactions in US dollars, euros, Tanzanian shillings, and Nigerian naira. While ruble payments are already accessible through third-party travel aggregators, the carrier is working to provide a native solution for direct sales.
Direct Flight Schedule and Route Logistics
The expansion of the carrier’s network includes a new flight program scheduled to commence on July 2, 2026. Flights will depart from Vnukovo International Airport (VKO) in Moscow, following a triangular route: Moscow – Zanzibar – Dar es Salaam – Moscow. The airline has established a consistent schedule with departures set for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
- Operated from Moscow Vnukovo (VKO).
- Primary destinations: Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam.
- Frequency: Three times per week.
This route structure is designed to cater to both leisure travelers heading to the archipelago and business passengers traveling to the commercial capital of Tanzania.
Collaboration with Tour Operators and Market Demand
The airline's Public Relations Manager, Jerry Edward Ng'eve, confirmed that active negotiations are underway with various tour operators to organize comprehensive travel packages utilizing these direct flights. This B2B cooperation is expected to further boost tourism figures. According to data provided by the Tanzania Tourist Board, initial interest in the new service is exceptionally high.
The first flights to Zanzibar are already 100% booked.
High occupancy rates for the inaugural flights indicate a significant pent-up demand for direct connectivity between the Russian Federation and East African coastal destinations.
As Air Tanzania prepares for its first arrival at Vnukovo, the implementation of local payment solutions remains a priority to enhance the user experience. By removing currency conversion barriers and providing direct flights, the carrier aims to capture a larger share of the growing tourism market in the region, offering a more efficient alternative to connecting flights through Middle Eastern hubs.
