Zhytomyr is one of Ukraine's oldest cities, first mentioned in writing in 1240. It is the administrative centre of Zhytomyr Oblast, situated on the Teteriv river on the boundary between Polissia and the right-bank forest-steppe.
Zhytomyr has long been known as a centre of gemstone and decorative stone extraction and processing. Zhytomyr Oblast is rich in deposits of labradorite, granite, pegmatite and gemstones. The city's Geological Museum holds one of the finest mineral collections in Ukraine, earning Zhytomyr the unofficial title of "city of stonemasons".
