Bus to Vilnius — what you need to know

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania, with one of the most beautiful and largest medieval old towns in Central and Eastern Europe. Baroque architecture, hilltop castles and the bohemian Užupis quarter make it uniquely captivating.

About Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, situated at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. First mentioned in 1323, the city was for several centuries the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — one of the largest states in medieval Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. This great legacy is embedded in the city's extraordinary architectural heritage.

Vilnius Old Town — one of the largest and best-preserved medieval urban cores in Central and Eastern Europe — was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. Over 1,500 buildings from the 15th–18th centuries survive in styles ranging from Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque and Classicism. Masterpieces include Cathedral Square with its Cathedral and bell tower, St Anne's Church (a late Gothic gem), Gediminas Castle on its hill and the Baroque ensemble of Vilnius University (one of the oldest in Central Europe, founded in 1579).

Vilnius's most quirky attraction is the Užupis quarter — a self-proclaimed "independent republic" of artists and bohemians, complete with its own constitution (translated into 70+ languages), coat of arms and guards on the bridge. On 1 April each year Užupis celebrates its Independence Day. Vilnius is also known for its thriving IT scene and startup ecosystem, making it one of the leading tech hubs in the Baltic region.
