About Sumy

Sumy is a city in eastern Ukraine, founded in 1655 by Cossack settlers from the right bank of the Dnipro. The city's name is linked to a legend about purses (sumy) of coins found during its founding. The city stands at the confluence of the Psel and Sumka rivers, whose picturesque banks are lined with parks and promenades — the main recreation areas for local residents.

Sumy is one of the oldest and most attractive industrial cities of eastern Ukraine, known for the Sumykhimprom chemical plant, shipbuilding and machine-building. The city centre preserves fine Neo-Renaissance and eclectic architecture typical of Sloboda Ukrainian towns.

Sumy Oblast borders Russia, which since 2022 has given the city particular significance as a frontline regional centre that continues to function as a full regional capital with universities, hospitals and cultural institutions.

According to legend, the Cossacks who founded the settlement in 1655 found three purses (sumy) of coins while ploughing the land, and named the place "Suma". This is also the origin of the name of the Sumka river that flows through the city.
Sumy stands at the confluence of the Psel river (a right tributary of the Dnipro) and the Sumka. The Psel embankment with its parks and gardens is the city's main recreation area and gives Sumy much of its scenic character.
Sumy is about 175 km from Kharkiv (roughly 2.5 hours by bus) and about 350 km from Kyiv (4–4.5 hours). Direct buses run between Sumy and both cities.
Sumy's centre preserves fine 19th–early 20th century architecture: the Transfiguration Cathedral (18th century), the former zemstvo building and Neo-Renaissance commercial buildings on Cathedral Square.
