Stanytsia Luhanska is an urban-type settlement in Luhansk Oblast, situated on the right bank of the Siversky Donets River approximately 8 km north-east of Luhansk city. With a population of around 14,000, it is one of the oldest Cossack settlements in the eastern part of the region, with origins dating to the 17th century when Cossack stanitsy (settlements) were established along the river valleys of the eastern steppe borderlands.
The Siversky Donets River at Stanytsia Luhanska forms a natural boundary feature and provides a scenic landscape of forested floodplains, meanders and oxbow lakes that contrast markedly with the surrounding industrial Donbas.
