About Smolensk
Smolensk is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Russia, situated on the upper Dnieper River approximately 400 km west of Moscow and 60 km east of the Belarusian border. With a population of around 320,000, it is the administrative centre of Smolensk Oblast and an important cultural, industrial and transit city on the main corridor between Moscow and Western Europe. The city's origins date to at least the 9th century, when it was a significant trading centre on the route "from the Varangians to the Greeks" connecting Scandinavia to Byzantium via the Dnieper.
Smolensk's most impressive monument is its kremlin — a massive 16th to 17th-century defensive wall with towers, encircling the historic core of the city. Commissioned by Tsar Boris Godunov and constructed between 1595 and 1602, the Smolensk Kremlin wall stretches nearly 6.5 km and is considered one of the finest examples of medieval Russian military engineering. Within the historic centre stands the Cathedral of the Dormition (Uspensky Sobor), built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier medieval church, with its towering Baroque exterior and opulent interior. Several pre-Mongol churches from the 11th and 12th centuries, remarkably well preserved, dot the city and make Smolensk one of the richest repositories of early Russian ecclesiastical architecture.
Smolensk's position has made it a battleground in some of the most pivotal conflicts in European history. Napoleon's army fought a major battle here in 1812 during his advance on Moscow; and in 1941 the city was the site of the two-month Battle of Smolensk, one of the largest confrontations of the Second World War. These layers of history give Smolensk a sombre grandeur that sets it apart from other Russian cities of similar size.
