About Simferopol

Simferopol is the administrative centre and main transport hub of the Crimean Peninsula, situated in the foothills of the Crimean Mountains at the geographical heart of the peninsula. With a population of approximately 340,000, it is the second-largest city in Crimea and the nodal point of the peninsula's road and rail network. The name Simferopol derives from the Greek meaning "city of use" or "city of benefit", reflecting its role as a practical and administrative centre rather than a resort destination.

The city has a layered history stretching back to ancient times. The Scythian fortress of Neapolis Scythica — capital of the late Scythian state — flourished here from the 3rd century BC until the 3rd century AD; its excavated ruins on the Petrovskie Skaly cliffs are among the most significant archaeological sites in Crimea. In the Crimean Khanate era the nearby settlement of Ak-Mechet served as a local administrative centre before the city was officially founded as Simferopol in 1784. The old Crimean Tatar quarter Ak-Mechet, with its mosques and traditional architecture, still survives in the eastern part of the city.

As the peninsula's main transit hub, Simferopol is well connected by road, rail and air to the principal resorts and cities of Crimea. The Trolleybus line linking Simferopol to Alushta and Yalta — at 86 km one of the longest in the world — departs from outside the central railway station.
