About Rivne

Rivne is the administrative centre of Rivne Oblast, situated on the Ustia river in north-western Ukraine. First mentioned in 1283, the city grew into a major industrial and cultural centre of western Ukraine after the Second World War.

Rivne Oblast is a world centre of amber extraction. The Polissia subsoil is estimated to hold up to 80% of the world's Baltic amber reserves. Rivne is the trading and processing hub of the amber industry, home to jewellery workshops and stone-cutting enterprises. The Rivne amber market is known throughout the country.

The city is also an important educational centre: the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering (NUWEE) and Rivne State University of the Humanities attract thousands of students each year. Rivne is a major transit hub, with key roads running between Kyiv, Lutsk, Ternopil and Belarus passing through the city.
