Poltava is one of Ukraine's most charming and verdant cities, nicknamed the "garden city" for its numerous parks, boulevards and gardens. It is the administrative centre of Poltava Oblast and one of the most important centres of Cossack–Hetmanate culture.

Poltava's main claim to world fame is the Battle of Poltava on 27 June 1709, in which Peter I's army defeated the forces of Charles XII of Sweden and the Cossack troops of Hetman Mazepa. This battle is regarded as a turning point in the Great Northern War. The battlefield and memorial complex survive 6 km from the city centre.

Poltava is the birthplace of Ivan Kotliarevsky (author of the Eneida, the first major work of modern Ukrainian literature) and is inseparably linked with the names of Gogol, Korolenko and Panas Myrnyi.
