This battle is regarded as a turning point in the Great Northern War. The battlefield and memorial complex survive 6 km from the city centre.

Poltava is the birthplace of Ivan Kotliarevsky (author of the Eneida, the first major work of modern Ukrainian literature) and is inseparably linked with the names of Gogol, Korolenko and Panas Myrnyi.
