The city's name derives from the word "pereval" (mountain pass) — the city is indeed situated on an elevated section of terrain, which made it a natural crossing point when the railway was laid here in the 19th century.
The city is part of the Luhansk coal belt. Underground coal mining began here in the 19th century and the mining trade became the main occupation of the local population for generations. The Pereval'ska mine was for many years the city-forming enterprise and main employer.
