Bus to Odesa — what you need to know

Odesa is the capital of Odesa Oblast and Ukraine's third-largest city. The "Pearl of the Black Sea" — the country's largest seaport and most celebrated seaside destination.

About Odesa

Odesa is one of Ukraine's most distinctive cities, situated on the Black Sea coast. Founded in 1794 by decree of Catherine II, it rapidly became the largest port and trading centre of southern Russia. Its multi-ethnic commercial character produced the unique "Odessan" temperament — ironic, relaxed and open to everything new — which became a cultural brand far beyond the city itself.

Odesa's architectural centre is one of the finest in Ukraine: Ryshelievska Street, Derybasivska Street, Greek Square, the Opera House (1887), the Potemkin Steps — 192 steps linking the Prymorskyi Boulevard to the sea — and the boulevard itself with the monument to the Duc de Richelieu.

Odesa is the birthplace of a celebrated literary tradition: Isaac Babel with his "Odessa Tales", Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov ("The Twelve Chairs") and Konstantin Paustovsky. The Odesa catacombs are the largest network of underground passages in Europe, stretching over 2,500 km.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Odesa Bus Terminal (58 Kolontaivska Street). Derybasivska Street and the Potemkin Steps are a 25-minute tram ride or 10-minute taxi from the terminal.
