Novooleksiivka is an urban-type settlement at the very south of Kherson Oblast, situated directly on the boundary with Crimea. This unique geographical position gave the settlement strategic importance as a transport hub between Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula.

Novooleksiivka railway station is a junction point where lines diverge towards Dzhankoi and deeper into Crimea, and towards Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Until 2014 the station was the main crossing point for trains between Crimea and Ukraine. Regular rail services between the mainland and Crimea via Novooleksiivka have not operated since then.

The settlement is surrounded by the typical steppe farmland of southern Kherson Oblast. Alongside agriculture, the local economy has traditionally been tied to transit functions and railway servicing.
