About Mukachevo

Mukachevo is one of the oldest cities in Zakarpattia, first mentioned in writing in 895. The city is situated in the Transcarpathian lowland at the foot of a volcanic hill crowned by the medieval Palanok Castle. Over its long history Mukachevo has been part of the Hungarian Kingdom, the Principality of Transylvania, the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian Empires, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union — a heritage that has left the city with a unique multicultural character.

Palanok Castle (Mukachevo Castle) is the city's main landmark and one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Central Europe. Built on a 68-metre volcanic outcrop in the 14th–17th centuries, it is a three-tier fortress with powerful walls. Today it houses the Zakarpattia Regional Museum of Local History. The castle top offers panoramic views over the city and the Transcarpathian plain.

Mukachevo is known for its winemaking tradition: Zakarpattia is one of Europe's oldest wine regions, and numerous wineries around the city produce wines from local and classic grape varieties. The city is also an important trade and transit point: the Hungarian border is about 30 km away and the Slovak border about 65 km.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Mukachevo Bus Terminal (Narodna Square). Palanok Castle is a 20-minute walk from the terminal. Uzhhorod is 40 km away (30 minutes by minibus).
