About Moscow

Moscow (Moskva) is the capital and largest city of Russia and, with a population of over 12 million in the city and approximately 20 million in the greater metropolitan area, the largest city in Europe. Situated on the Moscow River in north-central European Russia, it has been the political, economic and cultural centre of the country for most of the past 600 years. The city is home to the federal government, the Kremlin — the seat of the Russian President — and the headquarters of the country's largest corporations and media organisations.

The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square, at the heart of the city, constitute one of the most recognised architectural ensembles in the world and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St Basil's Cathedral, with its distinctive multicoloured onion domes, the Lenin Mausoleum, the GUM department store and the Kremlin walls form the core of this ensemble. The city's extraordinary metro system — one of the most beautiful and busiest in the world — features palatial stations adorned with marble, mosaics and bronze chandeliers, some of which are architectural masterpieces in their own right. The Bolshoi Theatre, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and the All-Russian Exhibition Centre (VDNKh) are among dozens of world-class cultural institutions.

Moscow has an extensive and complex transport infrastructure: twelve metro lines, an extensive bus and tram network, suburban MCD rail lines, three international airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo) and the Shchyolkovsky Bus Terminal — the main arrival point for coaches from the south and east. The city's vast size means journeys across it can be lengthy; the metro is by far the most efficient way to get around.
