About Minsk
Minsk is the capital and largest city of Belarus, situated on the Svislach and Nemiga rivers in the geographical centre of the country. With a population of over 2 million in the city and nearly 3 million in the greater metropolitan area, it is the largest city in Belarus and one of the ten largest cities in Eastern Europe. Minsk serves as the country's political, economic, cultural and transport hub, as well as the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
The city's most distinctive feature is its unique urban landscape shaped by large-scale Soviet postwar reconstruction. Much of central Minsk was devastated in the Second World War — the city lost over 80% of its buildings during the German occupation — and was rebuilt from the 1940s to the 1960s in the monumental Stalinist architectural style, resulting in wide boulevards, grand public squares and imposing civic buildings that give the city centre an architectural unity found in few other European capitals. Independence Avenue (Prospekt Nezavisimosti), stretching over 15 km across the city, is its main artery. The pre-war Old Town (Trinity Hill and Nyamiha) preserves fragments of older Minsk around the Svislach River and hosts bars, restaurants and galleries.
Minsk has a well-developed three-line metro system, trams, trolleybuses and buses that efficiently cover the entire city. The city is also home to the International Educational Campus, several major universities, a renowned circus, a large opera and ballet theatre, and Dinamo Stadium. Minsk National Airport, 42 km east of the centre, handles international connections to Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
