About Melitopol

Melitopol is one of the largest cities in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, situated on the Molochna River in the south of the region, approximately 120 km south of the city of Zaporizhzhia. With a population of around 150,000, it serves as an important agricultural, industrial and transport hub for the southern steppe zone. The city grew significantly in the 19th century as a centre for the processing and trade of agricultural produce from the fertile black-soil steppe.

The city and surrounding district are famous throughout the region for the cultivation of melons — Melitopol melons (especially the Kolkhoznitsa variety) have been celebrated for their sweetness and aroma for over a century. Fruit orchards and market gardens are a defining feature of the landscape around the city. An annual Melon Festival draws visitors from across the region each summer. The surrounding steppe is also productive for grain, sunflower and cherry cultivation.

Melitopol has a compact, walkable city centre with tree-lined boulevards, several local history museums and a botanical garden. The city is an important road junction on the route between the central and coastal parts of the south, with connections towards the Azov Sea coast and Crimea.
