About Mariupol
Mariupol is the largest city on the Azov Sea coast, situated in Donetsk Oblast at the mouth of the Kalmius River where it empties into the Azov Sea. Founded in 1778 and rebuilt following a fire in 1821, the city grew into one of the most significant industrial and port cities of the southern steppe zone during the 19th and 20th centuries. At its peak the city had a population of approximately 450,000 and was home to two of the largest metallurgical plants in the region — Azovstal and Ilyich Steel.
The city's port, one of the largest on the Azov Sea, handled substantial volumes of steel, coal and grain exports. The industrial districts to the east, built around the steelworks, contrast with the seafront area to the south, which features a long sandy beach, a park along the coast and the characteristic wide boulevards of Soviet urban planning. Mariupol's cultural life centred on a theatre, several museums including a local art museum, and a network of parks and public spaces.
Mariupol is associated with a significant Greek community — descendants of Christian settlers relocated from Crimea in the 18th century — who established a number of villages in the surrounding region and left a distinct cultural legacy. The Mariupol local history museum documented this heritage and the broader industrial history of the Azov coast.
