About Makiivka
Makiivka is a large industrial city in Donetsk Oblast that borders Donetsk directly to the east, forming part of the same continuous urban agglomeration. With a pre-war population of around 340,000, it was one of the largest cities in the Donbas and one of the most densely industrialised urban areas in the region. The city developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the Donets Basin coalfield expanded and large ironworks and steelworks were established in the area.
The city's economy was historically dominated by coal mining, coke production and metallurgy. Dozens of coal mines operated in and around Makiivka at the height of industrial activity, and the skyline was defined by the headframes (pit winding towers) of working collieries — a landscape shared with many Donbas cities. Makiivka Research Institute for Mine Safety (MacNII) was one of the leading institutions studying mine safety and rescue techniques in the region.
Despite its predominantly industrial character, Makiivka has a city centre with theatres, museums, parks and educational institutions. The city is directly contiguous with the Donetsk city boundary, and the two cities function as a single metropolitan area sharing infrastructure, transport and services.
