About Lutsk

Lutsk is one of Ukraine's oldest cities, with records dating to 1085. It is the administrative centre of Volyn Oblast, situated on the Styr river in north-western Ukraine. In the Middle Ages Lutsk was one of the most important fortresses of the Volyn Principality and the capital of Lithuanian holdings in Volyn.

The city's main landmark is Lutsk Castle (the Upper Castle), built in the 14th–15th centuries by Lithuanian princes. It is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Ukraine: towers and walls standing up to 20 m high remain virtually intact. Inside are museums, an art gallery and a courtyard used for knights' festivals. Every summer the castle hosts the "Lutsk Castle Invites" festival.

Lutsk is also an important industrial centre, home to a bearing plant, the Lutsk Agricultural Machinery plant and enterprises of the automotive and light industries. The city is growing rapidly and ranks among the most dynamic regional centres in western Ukraine.
