About Luhansk

Luhansk is the largest city of Luhansk Oblast, with a population of over 400,000. The city was founded in 1795 in connection with the construction of the Luhansk Iron Foundry — the first state-owned metallurgical plant in the eastern part of the region. From that point Luhansk grew into a major industrial and cultural centre of the Donbas.

The city is situated on the Luhanka river, a tributary of the Siversky Donets. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Luhansk was one of the largest industrial cities in the region, with well-developed coal, machine-building and chemical industries. The city is the birthplace of Vladimir Dal — the celebrated lexicographer and author of the four-volume Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language.

Luhansk has an extensive network of higher education institutions, theatres and museums. The Luhansk Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre and the Luhansk Art Museum are the city's most significant cultural institutions.
