This linear configuration reflects the layout of the Kryvorizky iron ore basin (Kryvbas) — one of the world's largest iron ore deposits — around whose mines and open-cast pits different parts of the city grew during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The city's largest enterprise is ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (formerly Kryvorizhstal) — one of the most powerful metallurgical plants in Ukraine and Europe. Kryvyi Rih is also home to Ukraine's only rapid-transit tram (Kryvorizky Shvydkisnyi Tramvai), which links the elongated city across 18 stations from north to south. The city is the birthplace of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
