About Kropyvnytskyi
Kropyvnytskyi is the administrative centre of Kirovohrad Oblast, situated in central Ukraine on the banks of the Inhul river. The city was founded in 1754 as the fortress of St Elizabeth and has carried several names over its history: Yelysavethrad (1775), Zinovievsk (1924), Kirovo (1931), Kirovohrad (1934) and, finally, Kropyvnytskyi from 2016, named in honour of the outstanding theatre director and playwright Marka Kropyvnytskyi.
The city is located at the geographical centre of Ukraine, giving it a special symbolic significance. A geodetic marker near the city indicates this geographical midpoint. Kropyvnytskyi is a major transit hub between Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro and Poltava, with the Kyiv–Odesa highway and a railway corridor passing through.
The city played an important role in the development of Ukrainian theatre in the 19th century: the first Ukrainian theatrical companies were formed here, associated with the names of Marka Kropyvnytskyi, Karpenko-Karyi and Sadovskyi.
