Bus to Krasnodon — what you need to know

Krasnodon is a city in eastern Luhansk Oblast, widely known for the Young Guard underground organisation of the Second World War. Located near Sorokyne and Izvaryne.

About Krasnodon

Krasnodon is a city in eastern Luhansk Oblast, situated in the Donetsk–Luhansk steppe zone. It arose and developed in the 20th century as a centre of coal extraction: dozens of mines were sunk around the city to produce the coking coal of the Luhansk coal basin.

Krasnodon gained international recognition through the Young Guard — an underground youth organisation that operated in the city during the Second World War. Its members carried out acts of sabotage and distributed anti-Nazi leaflets. Most of them were executed in 1943. Their story was told in the celebrated novel "The Young Guard" by Alexander Fadeyev (1945) and in film adaptations. The Young Guard Museum in the city centre attracts many visitors each year.

Today Krasnodon is a district centre with a developed network of educational, medical and cultural institutions. The city is located 50 km from Luhansk and 10 km from the Izvaryne crossing point.
