About Krakow
Krakow (Kraków) is Poland's second largest city by population and one of the most historically significant cities in Central Europe. Situated on the Vistula River in southern Poland, it served as the royal capital of the Polish Kingdom for over five centuries and remains the country's cultural and intellectual heartland. Unlike many Polish cities, Krakow's historic centre was largely spared the destruction of the Second World War and has been preserved almost intact.
The city's historic centre — including the vast Renaissance Old Town Market Square (Rynek Główny), the Gothic St Mary's Basilica with its celebrated wooden altarpiece, and the medieval Cloth Hall — was among the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. Rising above the city on Wawel Hill, the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral served as the seat of Polish kings and the burial place of national heroes. The adjacent Kazimierz quarter, the former Jewish district, is now one of the liveliest areas of the city.
Krakow is home to the Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1364. The city has a well-developed tram network and is compact enough to explore much of the historic centre on foot. John Paul II International Airport Kraków-Balice, 15 km west of the city, serves numerous European and international routes.
