About Kharkiv

Kharkiv is Ukraine's second city, founded in 1654 as a Cossack fortification. From 1919 to 1934 it served as the first capital of Soviet Ukraine, where the Ukrainian Soviet Republic was proclaimed and its first laws adopted. The transfer of the capital to Kyiv in 1934 did not diminish Kharkiv's role as the largest scientific, educational and industrial centre of left-bank Ukraine.

Kharkiv is Ukraine's "student capital" with over 30 universities and more than 200,000 students. Karazin Kharkiv National University (1805) is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country. Freedom Square in the city centre is one of the largest urban squares in Europe at about 12 hectares and is the city's defining symbol.

Kharkiv Physico-Technical Institute performed the first nuclear fission reaction in the USSR in 1932. The city is also one of Ukraine's leaders in the IT industry and startup ecosystem.
