Bus to Kerch — what you need to know

About Kerch

Kerch is a city with over 2,600 years of history, founded by ancient Greek colonists as Panticapaeum in the 7th century BC. Located at the easternmost tip of the Crimean Peninsula, on the shores of the Kerch Strait connecting the Black and Azov seas, Kerch is rightly considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe.

The city is an open book of millennia: the ruins of ancient Panticapaeum, Scythian burial mounds, the Genoese fortress of Yeni-Kale, and the medieval Church of St John the Baptist (8th–10th century) — one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the post-Soviet world — all survive here. Mount Mithridates with its massive royal burial mound and sweeping views over the strait is the city's top vantage point.

Kerch is also famous for its role in the Second World War: the city was twice awarded the title of Hero City and preserves numerous monuments and memorials, including the Adzhimushkay quarry catacombs.
