Bus to Kaunas — what you need to know

Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city and cultural capital. During the interwar period (1920–1940) it served as the temporary capital, leaving a unique heritage of modernist architecture now on the UNESCO list.

About Kaunas

Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city, situated at the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers. Founded in the 12th century, it was an important fortress city throughout the medieval period. From 1920 to 1940 Kaunas served as the temporary capital of the Lithuanian Republic after Vilnius was part of Poland — and during this brief but intensely creative era the city was transformed.

Over 300 buildings in Functionalist and Art Deco styles were constructed in Kaunas between 1920 and 1940, forming one of the most coherent ensembles of interwar modernism in Central Europe. In 2023 "Kaunas — City of (Temporary) Optimism" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The central Laisvės Boulevard — one of the longest pedestrian streets in the Baltic states — is the heart of city life.

Kaunas is also known for its remarkable museums: the Devil's Museum (the world's largest collection of devil imagery), the Aviation Museum and the National M.K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, housing unique works by the Lithuanian Symbolist painter and composer. Kaunas is also a significant university city.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Kaunas Bus Station (24 Vytauto Street). Laisvės Boulevard and the city centre are a 15-minute walk or a few trolleybus stops away.
