About Kakhovka

Kakhovka is one of the historic cities of Kherson region, founded in the 18th century on the left bank of the Dnipro. In the 19th century it was an important staging post on the chumak route — the Ukrainian salt-trading trail along which merchants transported salt from Crimea and the Black Sea coast into the interior. The Kakhovka fair was one of the largest in the Russian Empire at the time.

Kakhovka faces Nova Kakhovka on the opposite bank of the Dnipro, the two cities connected by a road bridge. In 1920 the area around Kakhovka was the site of the famous Red Army river crossing — the battle for the Kakhovka bridgehead, widely celebrated in Soviet culture, including the song "Kakhovka" (1935).

Today Kakhovka is a district centre with good transport links to Kherson (80 km) and Zaporizhzhia (180 km), surrounded by orchards and vineyards.
