Bus to Yenakiieve — what you need to know

Yenakiieve is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast located north of Donetsk. It is an important stop on the route for passengers from the central and northern districts of the Donetsk coal basin.

About Yenakiieve

Yenakiieve is an industrial city in Donetsk Oblast, situated approximately 50 km north-east of Donetsk in the hilly terrain of the central Donets Basin. With a pre-war population of around 80,000, it developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a coal-mining and metallurgical centre within the broader industrialisation of the Donbas. The city grew around the Yenakiieve Metallurgical Plant, one of the oldest and largest integrated steel facilities in the region.

The city's industrial legacy is embedded in its landscape: the distinctive silhouettes of blast furnaces and rolling mills defined the urban skyline for generations, while the surrounding hills are dotted with colliery headframes and spoil tips characteristic of the coal-mining Donbas. Despite its industrial foundations, Yenakiieve maintained parks, cultural institutions and a city centre that served the large population of workers and their families.

Yenakiieve is also noted as the birthplace of Viktor Yanukovych (b. 1950), who served as Prime Minister and later President. The city lies on transport routes connecting the northern and central parts of the Donetsk region to Debaltseve, an important railway junction, and onwards to Luhansk Oblast.
