Bus to Donetsk — what you need to know

Donetsk is the largest city in Donetsk Oblast and one of the major industrial and cultural centres of the Donbas region. The city serves as a final or transit point on routes to Makiivka, Khartyzsk and Novoazovsk; coaches have Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

About Donetsk

Donetsk is the largest city in the Donbas region and the administrative centre of Donetsk Oblast, situated in the south-east of the oblast on the Kalmius River. With a pre-war population of approximately one million, it was one of the largest industrial cities in Eastern Europe. The city was founded in 1869 by Welsh industrialist John Hughes, who established an ironworks at the site; the settlement was originally named Yuzovka in his honour and later renamed Stalino before receiving its current name in 1961.

Donetsk developed as the economic heart of the Donets Basin — a vast coalfield and industrial region that produced a substantial share of the region's coal, steel and chemicals output. The city's industrial landscape was defined by steel mills, coking plants and coal mines, many of which operated within or adjacent to the urban area. Despite its industrial character, Donetsk was known for an exceptionally well-maintained system of parks, gardens and public spaces, earning it the informal title of "city of roses and million roses" due to its prolific rose plantings.

Donetsk was also the home city of Shakhtar Donetsk football club, one of the most successful clubs in the regional football league history, and the Donbas Arena stadium — a UEFA 5-star facility built in 2009 and one of the most modern sports venues in Eastern Europe at the time of its opening.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Donetsk Central Bus Terminal (187 Artioma Street). The city centre is a 10–15 minute trolleybus or minibus ride from the terminal.
