The name of the city derives from the Debaltseve railway station, around which the settlement grew in the late 19th century with the construction of the rail network.
The railway junction at Debaltseve is the point where the main lines connecting Donetsk to Luhansk, and the east–west line linking the central Donbas to Kharkiv and the north, converge. This makes the city a critical node for both passenger and freight movement across the entire Donets Basin.
