Bus to Chernivtsi — what you need to know

Chernivtsi is the capital of Chernivtsi Oblast and "Little Vienna" of Ukraine, known for its magnificent Austrian architecture and UNESCO-listed university.

About Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi is one of the most distinctive cities in Ukraine, nicknamed "Little Vienna" for its beautiful Austrian architecture. It is the capital of Bukovyna — a geographical and cultural region now divided between Ukraine and Romania. From 1775 to 1918 Chernivtsi was the administrative centre of the Duchy of Bukovina within the Austrian and then Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it was during this period that the city's unique architectural character took shape.

The main landmark is Chernivtsi National University, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 as part of the "Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans". The university complex, built in 1864–1882 to designs by Czech architect Josef Hlavka, is a masterpiece of Neo-Romanesque and Moorish styles with no equivalent in Central Europe.

The city is close to the Romanian border (40 km) and the Moldovan border (25 km), making it a convenient transit point. It is also a recognised literary centre — Paul Celan, one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, was born here.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Chernivtsi Bus Terminal (Gagarina Street). The UNESCO university and city centre are a 20-minute walk or 7-minute minibus ride away.
