Bus to Chernihiv — what you need to know

Chernihiv is the capital of Chernihiv Oblast and one of Ukraine's oldest cities, founded in the 9th century. It has the highest concentration of pre-Mongol churches of any city in Ukraine.

About Chernihiv

Chernihiv is one of Ukraine's oldest cities with an unbroken history of over a thousand years. First mentioned in 907, it was the capital of the Chernihiv Principality in the 10th–12th centuries — one of the most powerful political entities of the Rus' period, rivalling Kyiv itself for influence.

On the Chernihiv Citadel and its surroundings stand four magnificent churches from the 11th–12th centuries: the Transfiguration Cathedral (1036) — one of the oldest Orthodox churches on the territory of modern Ukraine — the Borys and Hlib Cathedral (1123), the Dormition Cathedral of the Yeletsky Monastery (c.1070) and the Pyatnytska Church (12th century). This is the only ensemble of pre-Mongol architecture of such completeness on the entire Eastern Slavic plain.

The Anthony Caves are a particularly special attraction — an underground monastery akin to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, established in the 11th century by the monk Anthony of the Caves. Underground passages, churches and Rus'-era burials survive here in their original state.

Travel tips
The bus arrives at Chernihiv Bus Terminal (Pryvokzalna Street). The Citadel and Transfiguration Cathedral are a 20-minute walk away. Kyiv is 140 km from Chernihiv.
