Askania-Nova (30 km from Chaplynka) is the oldest steppe nature reserve in Europe and one of the world's largest remaining tracts of untouched steppe. It preserves virgin grassland that has almost entirely disappeared elsewhere in Eurasia. The reserve is home to European bison, zebras, gnu antelopes, ostriches, kangaroos and over 150 bird species, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world each year.
