About Berdyansk
Berdyansk is a port city on the Azov Sea coast in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, situated on a wide peninsula that juts into the sea approximately 80 km east of Melitopol. With a population of around 110,000, it combines the functions of a commercial seaport, a health resort and an industrial centre. The city was founded in 1827 as a trading port for the export of grain from the fertile southern steppes and grew rapidly over the following decades.
Berdyansk's position on the Azov Sea gives it a distinctive character among the cities of the southern steppe zone. The Azov Sea at this point is relatively shallow and warms quickly in summer, making the coastline attractive for bathing. The Berdyansk Spit — a narrow strip of land extending 23 km into the sea — is the city's most distinctive geographical feature and a popular destination for its beaches and bird life. The spit is a breeding habitat for numerous species of waterfowl and shore birds.
The city has a functioning commercial port and a history of light industry including machinery and food processing. A local history and art museum and the Berdyansk Pedagogical University give the city a modest cultural life. The broad tree-lined promenade along the seafront is the social heart of the resort season.
