About Bilovodsk
Bilovodsk is a city in the northern part of Luhansk Oblast, situated in the rolling farmland near the border with Kharkiv Oblast. With a population of around 13,000, it is a district centre whose economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and food processing. The city lies in the Luhan River basin, a tributary of the Siversky Donets, in a landscape of black-soil (chornozem) farmland interspersed with small rivers, ravines and tree-lined gullies.
The surrounding district is one of the most important livestock-farming areas in the region. Horse breeding has a particularly long tradition here: Bilovodsk district is home to several stud farms, and the area has been associated with horse breeding since at least the 18th century, when steppe conditions and abundant pasture made it ideal for raising herds. The Bilovodsk Stud Farm was one of the most prominent institutions of its kind in the region.
Bilovodsk has a modest but attractive urban centre with a small local history museum and the Church of the Assumption, a notable example of late 18th-century provincial ecclesiastical architecture. The natural environment of the northern Luhansk steppe — with its wide fields, small ponds and patches of native steppe vegetation — is characteristic of the transitional zone between the forest-steppe of central Sloboda Ukraine and the open steppe to the south.
